Dog Obesity is a serious threat

Dog Obesity is a serious threat

Australia’s obesity epidemic is accelerating at an alarming rate, with almost one million more people becoming obese in the PAST THREE YEARS ALONE!!

You know what they say, “dogs look like their owners” and it stands to reason that as we get fatter so will our pets.

As at 2015 41% of dogs in Australia are classed as overweight or obese.

It can be really difficult to tell if your dog is getting a bit tubby if they have lots of fur.

However it’s something that we really notice in the salon because we clip and then bathe your dog, so the love handles tend to stand out to us – particularly as we only see your pooch once every few weeks.

How is this happening?  It is becoming a lot more understood that the “specially formulated” processed dog foods on the market are little more than corn and flour soaked in drippings.  Your poor dog doesn’t stand a chance at maintaining a healthy weight without the proper nutrients.

It is important to understand that a dog lacking in essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals will always appear hungry and looking for more, even if they have just eaten a full bowl of food.  That’s where the temptation can be to feed them just a little bit of this, and just a little bit of that.

Obesity is just the beginning of the problem.  It is difficult for some understand that obese dogs are actually suffering from malnutrition.  They lack the essential nutrients necessary to keep their system functioning well.  So they will experience other issues as a result of this:

  • skin disorders,
  • itchiness,
  • foul smelling excrement
  • foul smelling urine that will kill your grass,
  • anal gland issues,
  • hormonal issues,
  • depression

as well as more serious conditions such as;

  • diabetes,
  • arthritis
  • heart conditions
  • renal failure
  • liver disease
  • cancers.

An obese or overweight dog is a sick dog, an unhealthy dog and a dog whose days are well and truly numbered.  No one wants this for their best friend.

There are many in the pet industry who would like us all to believe that these problems that have become so common now, are normal.

“Common” should never be confused with “Normal”.

The good news is that there is something that you can do to help.  Exercise will build muscle but at the end of the day if you are not feeding your dog properly you will always have problems.

We are very big advocates of feeding a raw balanced diet based on a dogs’ natural behaviours, and if this interests you we would really encourage you to investigate this further.  This is the ultimate way to feed your dog and you can be assured that if you feed your dog well, he will live a long, healthy and vibrant existence.

However for many of you, the convenience of a packaged food is a necessary part of our busy lives.
